I was born in March of 1957.  I grew up wanting to see the birth of kittens.  I love cats, little ones, big ones, Siamese ones.  Someday, when I get to the next life, I think I will ask God if I can spend my first night there sleeping in the armpit of a great big African Lion cat.  Because God never did answer my childhood wish, I had to settle for the next best thing.  I got to see people born when I was 18 years old.    I was a young nursing student, who had chosen the profession for the stupidest reason ever.  I had read a book called Sara Barton, RN.  Sara had the great romantic ecstasy of being able to kiss a medical student in the basement hospital tunnel which sent waves of funny feelings through the core of my being. My immediate reaction was to think, “Sign me up, that sounds amazing!” Unfortunately, those funny feelings were missing when I realized that I didn’t particularly like sick people, especially old male, pale sick people.  I felt intense pressure to succeed since I was the first of my generation in the family to attempt college.  The feeling of misery I felt as I was trapped in my first year of college burst suddenly when that baby arrived so blue and beautiful on the first day of my rotation of obstetrics.  I knew immediately that this was what I was meant to do for life!    It has been 35 years since that baby slithered out into our world. I wonder what he is up to these days.  I am still a staff nurse in Labor and Delivery and I still watch the miracle of birth most every single day.   About 12 years ago, I got to see kittens born.  It was amazing!  From that day forward, a new passion began to develop in my inner core.  I have the passion, which has grown since that day, to turn my steps to walk along side parents who experience the death of their child.  I often still refer to cats when I ask the sibling of a child that died at the immature age of 21 weeks, if they have ever seen a kitten.  When they tell me they have, I often reply that their baby brother is the size of a kitten and then ask them if they would like to see him.    Someday, when I stretch out on the ground primping the leaves to make a comfortable bed and nuzzle and even breathe deeply into the armpit of that greatest of cats, I think I might have another request.  I think I will ask for seven more lion kittens to be my blanket that night and their purrs to be my music to sleep by.  Hope it’s a cool night and not too soon from now.  I have a few more families I need to help and a few more miracles to watch.
