After my senior project internship at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, I got my SCUBA certification and did some Search/Recovery dives at UC Riverside. Following an interest in working with dolphins, I started reading John Lilly (Man and Dolphin, The Mind of the Dolphin), but got more interested in his other work (Programming and Metaprogramming in the Human Biocomputer, Center of the Cyclone) and did some isolation tank sessions. I spent a summer driving a cab in NYC. After 2 years at UC Riverside, I decided to go for a medical degree and transferred to UC Berkeley, pre-med. In my first semester at Berkeley, though, I ran into the meditation group that Lilly refers to in Center of the Cyclone - Arica. Being completely out-gunned, out-performed, & literally out-smarted by the Asian invasion at UC, I follow my early 70's Bay Area brethren and Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out. I drove cabs in Boston and San Francisco, but for most of the next five years, I practiced Tai Chi, taught meditation classes, and learned how to make laser holograms. The holography started to take hold; I got a small piece in a Franklin Institute exhibit of holographic art work. I decided to learn more about my tools, and enrolled in a laser technology course at San Jose CC, only to drop out after one semester there because I got a job building ion gas lasers at Coherent, Inc. in Palo Alto. After a year, I was the lead technician in the ion lab, in charge of training and over-seeing all 3 shifts of production. After almost three years, though, all I was doing was building lasers - no holography. I took a trip back east and wrote to one of the top art holographers in NY, asking if I could stop by to see his studio. We became friends and I ended up spending a long weekend out in the Hamptons at a major get-together of holographers sponsored by the Museum of Holography. I went back to California and gave notice to Coherent - leaving to move back east and work at the Museum, and then at the Center for Optics & Holography at NYIT (this lab was located in Glen Cove, in the same building as NYIT's Computer Graphics Lab. Some of the folks who ran CGL went on to start Pixar studios). I was involved with various holography projects over the next 5 years or so, all the while playing with most of the computers available at the time; from a Sinclair that had a little template pad for a keyboard and stored data on an audio cassette tape, to an Osborne portable running CP/M loaded from 5†floppies, through the Commodore computers – 64, 128, Amiga, early 8088 PCs, to a DEC VAX machine at NYIT, along with a Silicon Graphics machine running Paint – one of the original high-end computer graphics applications. The holography projects I participated in included making a holographic souvenir card with Polaroid for the Metropolitan Museum of Art (see profile pic), consulting on the December 1988 National Geographic holographic cover (I was now an independent consultant, founding Light Harmonics Inc.), and overseeing construction of a commercial holographic lab at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, outside of Copenhagen. In the Denmark lab, I supervised the production of the master for China’s first mass produced embossed hologram (Year of the Rabbit commemorative stamp 1987). Soon after returning from the Denmark project, I was approached by an electronic component manufacturing company to help them in their computer department, which would require learning the programming for their database application (PICK). I agreed to do this and poof! 25 years later I'm still there, the Senior Analyst for Global IT at Bel/Stewart/Cinch (we have 23 locations on 3 continents).
