Joseph is the Senior Group Head for Bioinformatics in Biomarker Development at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR) in Cambridge, MA. He is currently leading a team of six bioinformaticians responsible for the development and implementation of analytical methods to support the discovery of biomarkers in various clinical data sets. His group also has responsibilities for the analysis of biomarker data as well including microarray, rtPCR, soluble and cellular markers. Currently, Joseph's group is analyzing Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data for a number of applications. These include: RNA-Seq, microRNA-Seq, prediction of novel microRNAs, targeted DNA resequencing of mammalian and microbial genomes, and de novo sequencing and assembly of microbial genomes. Joseph has been with Novartis since 2003, where his focus has been on the analysis of various -omic data sets in both pre-clinical settings (target discovery) and clinical settings (biomarker discovery). At Novartis, Joseph was an early advocate for the application of pathway-centric methods for analyzing microarray data, and spearheaded a project to centralize and systematize such analyses. Joseph holds degrees in Physics (B.S.) and Biomedical Engineering (Ph.D.), has authored two book chapters and 15 peer-reviewed publications, including the 2000 Nature paper detailing the initial draft of the Human Genome (where true to form, Nature mis-spelled his last name).
