My inspiration often comes from the endless question What can I do to take this piece somewhere new, somewhere different than others have gone before I typically begin a new piece with many drawings and sketches as well as a desire to try a new process or work with interesting materials. I am moving from using commercial cloth to creating my own fabrics by using different dying and surface design techniques. I love it when the finished piece is completely mine from start to finish. My recent works use four or five layers of surface design which may include deconstructed screen printing, painting, stamping, drawing with oil sticks and pencils, rubbings, and machine and hand stitching. My current work hints at the mixing of geometric and organic textures with layer upon layer of complex surface tension. Its about exploration where unexpected connections and juxtapositions can lead to new ideas and artistic expressions. I enjoy not having complete control over the outcome of my work and as I layer, create each line, shape or pattern, add or take away color, and stitch, the decisions made after each step change the options for the next decision. Its why making art is so intriguing to me and something I am driven to do every day. For me it is a great day, when I am in my studio, sharing new inspirations with visitors or seeing the efforts of my imagination take unexpected and unique forms right in front of my eyes. When I see another way to stretch the definition of fiber art, thats when I feel excited about what I am doing. read more ...
