DANIEL SAGEEvery once in a while a young artist comes along with a lot to give and nothing to lose. Daniel Sage, a multitalented singer/songwriter/guitarist, is exactly that type of musician. His rough hewn yet melodic rock, built on a foundation of lived-in blues, is at once both hopeful and hopelessly romantic. With a passionately desperate voice, he confidently delivers piercing lyrics that swell upon waves of fervent guitar riffs. Since leaving his Winston-Salem, NC roots, the 18 year old Sage seems to have lived far more than his age would suggest, but manages to find hope where others just seem world weary.After attending an Eric Clapton concert at 13, Daniel was inspired to pick up the guitar and hasn't been able to put it down since. Among his most prominent influences are guitarist/songwriters in the various molds of Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, and Jack White. Back in North Carolina, Sage began honing his talents at an early age, playing in a couple of garage rock bands. The first, Neuropath, was a Zeppelin and Sabbath-inspired throwback group, lead by Sage on guitar and vocals. Shortly thereafter, he took a different direction and assumed the role of bassist for the grungy three piece act Solar Void. Their first EP, What Would the Neighbors Say, was released in 2009 and generated considerable local buzz, even garnering praise from RCA A&R man Jeff Aldrich. Somewhat ironically, it was at this time that Daniel felt he had to leave the group to pursue his own dream.Since transitioning from band leader to solo troubadour, Sage has begun to explore a deeper range of emotional and sonic landscapes. With authentic and palpable conviction, he writes songs birthed from experiences gained during a prolonged period of nomadic travel. Among these, songs like "Divine," written in a lonely hotel room, brokenly lament the loss of intimacy. In it, Sage cries out "Someday I'll sail the sea/searching for what is missing in me/and all the people I left behind/will be forever in my mind." These themes of isolation and disconnectedness seep through the cracks in many of his songs; yet despite finding himself homeless and heartbroken, Sage harnessed these sorrows and turned them into a driving force. Rather than stale, self-pitying shoegaze, his songs immediately reveal a genuine and universally relatable songwriter in the making.As Sage continues to chart a new path in his musical world, he continues to bring new people, artists and fans alike, along for the ride. At present, he is taking a break from the roving lifestyle, and resides in Memphis, TN, where he has begun playing clubs, bars, dives, and wherever the next turn in the road may take him. With designs on recording his solo debut (tentative release set for winter 2010/11), Sage is gathering a cast of supporting musicians from the Memphis scene.
