After 25 years as a working journalist, I began working to help change and improve the profession of journalism. After a few years as a media critic, I founded the Washington News Council in 1998 with a few other recovering journalists who wanted to make a difference. The WNC is a kind of "outside ombudsman" for the news media in Washington state. We are modeled after the Minnesota News Council, which was founded in 1970. In our 13 years, we have accomplished a great deal to hold the news media publicly accountable and to engage citizens and journalists in discussing standards of media ethics and performance.
