In November, , after spirited primary and general election contests, I was elected to the Mass. State Senate for the district consisting of Bedford, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Waltham, Weston, and large parts of Lexington and Sudbury. I'm delighted to be serving. As a candidate I stressed my private-sector experience in health IT and my commitment to supporting entrepreneurship in health care, life sciences, computers and "smart" technology generally. When not attending to legislative and district business, I fill my long-time private sector consulting role, performing strategic analysis and market research for clients in healthcare and the life sciences. I focus on information technology and its use by physicians, consumers, hospitals, health plans, vendors, and firms involved with consumer electronics, medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Prior to founding Critical Mass in , I was Senior Analyst for Healthcare at Forrester Research. At both firms, a particular interest has been the consumers role in managing his or her health outside the hospital and doctor's office. Much of my consulting revolves around "smart patient" technology telecomm and Internet devices that people use to stay healthy and manage chronic conditions. Earlier, in -, I served as CEO and General Counsel of the Visiting Nurse Associations of New England, a network of nonprofit providers covering Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. In - I practiced law and served in the Mass. State Senate, co-chairing the Legislature's Joint Committee on Health Care and spearheading a number of early efforts to expand coverage and contain costs. I've published articles on public policy and politics in the Atlantic Monthly, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Christian Science Monitor and New York Newsday. I sing lead and play guitar with Arl-Lex Five Dime, a band performing folk, country, gospel and bluegrass music in venues near Boston. read more ...
