I am an archivist who specializes in encoded metadata. Early in my career I had the opportunity to implement Encoded Archival Description (EAD) at the Massachusetts Historical Society. That experience allowed me to learn XSLT and other XML-related technologies. Since arriving at Yale I've remained deeply involved in developing systems for the creation and delivery of EAD-encoded finding aids, and have expanded my XML skills to include RelaxNG schema and XSL-FO. I've also expanded my areas of encoding expertise to include MARCXML, MODS, Dublin Core, and EAC. As they are deeply intertwined with encoded metadata transmission standards, I am intimately familiar with archival description standards, such as Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and the suite of standards maintained by the International Council on Archives (ICA). In addition to my experience with encoded metadata, I also process and catalog manuscript collections, and am a strong advocate for baseline processing and the efficient distribution of the scarce resources available for describing archival materials. Looking ahead, I hope to be a leader in implementing Encoded Archival Context - Corporate bodies, Persons, and Families (EAC-CPF) as a schema for archival authority records, a new standards which will enable archives to move toward new models of access and develop next a new generation of integrated collection management systems.
