My golden rule for customer service - Measure what is important to your customers, build a metric baseline and then develop an improvement plan based on measurable goals. Employees respond well to targets that they can see every day. By giving your team a finish line they can see, everyone pushes harder and achieves more. My golden rule for budgets - Cost vs. benefit. Will this expense reduce risk, improve satisfaction or provide other benefits that is worth the cost. If the expense doesn't make the company better, then it should be eliminated. My golden rule for metrics - If the metric doesn't get someone out of their chair or cause an action, then the metric is simply noise and should be eliminated.
