After graduating from Troy University with a B.S. in Speech Communication and a minor in Leadership Development, Timothy "TJ" Martin worked in nonprofit management building chapters of a leadership development and mentoring program specifically for young men between the ages of and . In that role he established chapter operations, directed chapter processes, planned implemented development programs, coordinated fundraising initiatives volunteers, and managed the logistics for multiple chapter sites in the state of Alabama. He then moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he worked for The Department of Housing and Residential Communities at The University of Alabama as the Assistant Community Director for the Ridgecrest South Community. TJ completed his M.A. in Communication Studies at The University of Alabama. His research interests include examining the influence of nonverbal communication within instruction and the classroom, intercultural communication and specifically the intersection of religion and leadership, persuasive speeches and the language of social movements and social justice initiatives, and language and communication within business and higher education contexts. His academic focus in Communication Studies was on the application of communication within leadership training and development curriculum. After spending several years at The University of Alabama, in he moved across the country and joined The Department of Residence Life at Washington State University as a Residential Education Director.
