I have worked as a news reporter and editor most of my life starting in high school. For years, I have reported on the nonprofit world. I believe the news media, in whichever format or platform they deliver news, are critical to democracy and need to do a much better job helping people understand social and global problems and efforts to address their symptoms and causes. I also believe no one has a monopoly on ideas for how to fix those problems. I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the New England School of Law in Boston, and worked for weekly and daily newspapers in Massachusetts and North Carolina before joining The News Observer in Raleigh, N.C., in . At The NO, I reported on government, politics, education and regulated industries, and served as business editor. In , as business editor, I started writing a weekly philanthropy column, and two years later created the Philanthropy Journal of North Carolina, a publication of The News and Observer Foundation that was the first statewide newspaper in the U.S. to report on the charitable world. I edited the Philanthropy Journal through April . And in May , I launched Philanthropy North Carolina, which provides news and advisory services for nonprofits. I was editor of The Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper at UNC-Chapel Hill, and have taught nonprofit reporting and media relations there and at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and regularly speak at workshops, seminars, meetings and conferences on the topics of nonprofit communications and trends in the charitable world. read more ...
