Jones worked previously as corporate vice president of the Windows Client group, as general manager and group program manager for Internet Explorer, and supported the shipment of Internet Explorer versions 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0. Other positions he has held in program management at Microsoft range from consumer e-mail to desktop publishing. Jones joined Microsoft in 1991. He holds a bachelor's degree in mathematical and computational sciences from Stanford University.
