Jennifer Rauch, a professor of journalism and communication at Long Island University in Brooklyn, has taught news writing, political rhetoric, media culture, online journalism and other topics for more than a dozen years, as well as seminars on From Boob Tube to YouTube and Digital Disenchantment Analog Alternatives. Her audience research looks at the values and practices of people who use activist and alternative media -- as well as new subcultures of people who resist or avoid digital media -- using discourse analysis, surveys, interviews and ethnographic methods. Rauch has a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Indiana University, where she was a Chancellors Fellow, and seven years of prior experience as a journalist for Philadelphia City Paper, China Daily and many other publications. She contributed a chapter on Participation Beyond Production The Possibilities for Reception Ritual and in the Study of Activist Audiences to a forthcoming Blackwell book on audience research, as well as the very last entry to the International Encyclopedia of Communication Zines.
