I'm an educator and a Deweyite ( John Dewey). I believe education is a basic human right and a life long process. Technology in the classroom helps us reach all learning styles, preferences and differences. -Education is a social process; education is growth; education is not a preparation for life but is life itself. - jd -Anyone who has begun to think, places some portion of the world in jeopardy. -jd and, my favorite...I live by this one -Arriving at one goal is the starting point to another. -jd On a personal note, I'm a grandmother. My first grandchild, Anabel, was born June 15, 2005 and she calls me Nanu (suppose to be Nanna, but Nanu fits me). She's my joy. I have 3 children and they are my true accomplishments in life. I'm a photographer...more of a historian. You won't catch me without a camera in my hand. I have a passion for documenting moments with my digital camera to pass on to the next generation and generations to come. Old photographs from other eras fascinate me. I always look at old photos people, long gone from this earth, and wonder who they were and what they felt at the moment the picture was taken. I love to travel and talk to people. I travel with my companion, Michael Webb, professor at Cooper Union and founding member of Archigram (Architecture), on his lecture tours and help him with his presentations. I meet so many fascinating people at the universities we visit. In general, life is good :) Professionally - From Cleveland, Ohio to Stony Brook, NY, I've come a long way both geographically and professionally. I've left the shores of Lake Erie and moved to the shores of Long Island Sound. I've become a Long Islander and the first Learning Architect at Stony Brook University. What's a Learning Architect? By trade, I'm an instructional designer and educational technologist. I specialize in multimedia instructional design and active learning techniques in the online and traditional classroom. My challenge at Stony Brook is researching active learning methods used in the large lecture halls that seat 500 students. I’m documenting the creative ways the Stony Brook faculty reaches and teach their students in the large lecture classrooms. In addition to my instructional design experience, I've taught online and traditional courses in computer applications, multimedia design, and communications, and business. Also, I developed a Blogging for Business series and a Using Web 2.0 Technologies to Promote Your Business series for Continuing and Community Education. I have conducted several in-service workshops for higher education and K-12 educators on Teaching in a Social Participatory Culture and the use of Web 2.0 technologies in the classroom. Previously, I worked in broadcast news and public/government access television. I held in-service workshops on video and television production techniques in the classroom for K-12 educators and served as the television production advisor for the educational cable access channel. I received regional and national awards for my local television productions and my work with community education in television production. I received my Masters of Arts in Education, specializing in Instructional Technology from the University of Akron. My B.A. is in Business Administration from Hiram College. I studied television production and communication, briefly, at Lorain County Community College and education at The Ohio State University. My research includes the use of technology in the classroom in relationship with the learning styles of students with ADHD. Currently, I am researching future technology trends and challenges in Distance Learning. This includes the pedagogy of Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies in the distance and tradition classroom.
