Just fanboi-love the thing they've built for us here, but there's no way to mod down the meta, is there?Google+ is a meta social network; all they do there is talk about Google+. It's in barely closed beta [and a well executed beta it is, props]. All they talk about here tho is what it is and how to use it. 18M or 20M or 25M or 30M accounts and all you can see in the public streams from dawn to dusk is: Top five reasons ... my take on ... my analysis of ... what the future holds ... five points to get you started ... how to use ... how to get more followers ... why they may really have something here ... why this may be really Really BIG. Around the edges there's more, but it's a crumbly thin crust made up of photographers publishing their Picasa landfills or lolcat gifs. They can't be still doing this come New Year's eve, right?Ooop and just when all that died down they turned back unto themselves with the Real Names Fiasco, and now all people do is write "thoughtful posts" about how real names are bad and evil and evail and thoughtless and disparage some corner case of the user base; see Bradley Horowitz' busting MYTH: Google doesn’t care about ____. (businesses, teenagers, organizations, pseudonymous usage, disadvantaged populations, etc.).Indeed it's just an echo chamber in here.  Surely there's an effect here which can be measured in 2011 more than characterized in friend-as-trend vignettes from 2009. Such is the case when a 2nd copy of any service is launched. But it's still the case that all the conversations here on G+ (the preponderance of, the plurality of, golly sure a whole passle of them) are about how G+ is great, G+ will win, G+ is not F. and so on. So far, what I see in the main Stream just an echo chamber of the A-list invitees stumbling over each other to show mastery of the new media and to be "first" to discern the true intent of G. or to prognosticate the teleology of the service, to be seers and be seen as seers showing the way forward. As a thought or actual experiment, mod down anyone who mentions G+ in a post and you get nearly nothing to do here. While over on F. you get people chatting about life and their concerns; oversharing, undersharing, playing the game. Most folks, even unto the bare-legal kidlings know how to manage these sorts of a la bella figura activites in the public view. Charitably, F. is seven(?) years old and has been well through the activists workout processes, and the users have figured out what they want to do on it. G. is in beta (a very fine beta, congratulations guys); but the ambiance needs more depth. That maturity requires time and distance, and less echo chamber. Here, I have yet to have the sorts of "I'm more socialist and caring than thou" conversations that I have on F.  Or faux-trenchant analyses about how the Demos are better than the Repos or the Repos are better than the Demos because of some now-factchecked and thus willful hypocritical act.Oh, and the Real Names Thing.  Did I mention the Real Names Thing? If you want to learn stuff, go read pressers and promos on T.If you want to see smartness in your profession, go read L.If you want to hear what your buddies families are cooking for dinner, go to F.If you want to see frivolous blog content curated to you and handed around, go to F.If you want to see RSS feeds from blogs, go to F., like a brand or a project and get their feed.If you want to see RSS feeds from blogs, go to your offline client RSS reader. But check back here less frequently until the meta burns out.
