My first experience in the game industry was back in high school. I started as a GM on a Star Wars MUD (I was a go-to guy for players that had problems or questions - mostly answered questions and handled griefers) and eventually became a world builder on the MUD. Unfortunately, like so many other MUDs, the game has since been shut down. I studied computer science for my first year of college, but moved to Arizona and switched to the game design program at the University of Advancing Technology in . While I was at UAT, I was the designer and producer for an over-ambitious survival-horror MMO student project, as well as one of the founding members of the student-run university newspaper. I started as the Game Editor, but ended up filling the role of staff writer due to low membership. I eventually became Editor-in-chief of the paper, and attempted to upgrade the software used to publish stories. I stepped down and passed the title on to another person in my second-to-last semester so I could focus on classwork and my internship. I got a design internship with a local startup, and was promoted to lead designer within a week of starting there. I stayed for a couple months after I had graduated and the internship ended, but I left the company in January of and the project I was working on was canceled shortly after. Since then, I've done level design for another local startup on another game that ended up cancelled, and have gone independent since then.
