Starting out in the healthcare arena as a masters-prepared registered dietitian, Cheryl has always been professionally driven by the mantra Food is Medicine and Medicine is Food. After a -year career as a registered dietitian mostly working in the intensive care units of Houstons Texas Medical Center, Cheryl concluded that becoming a nurse would help her empower her patients to understand the medicinal properties of food, in treating their health conditions. Therefore, Cheryl obtained a second bachelors degree and became a registered nurse. After many years of working as an intensive care nurse and treating the sickest of the sick, Cheryl became even more determined to reduce the significant suffering she witnessed and help prevent people from ever getting sick and requiring hospitalization in the first place. She therefore combined her nursing and nutrition credentials and forged her career in the outpatient diabetes arena to become a certified diabetes educator, working to keep people healthy and out of hospitals. It wasnt long before Cheryl realized that the area of diabetes was her calling, and she again returned to school for a second masters degree, to become a family nurse practitioner, specializing in diabetes management. Cheryl now works in this capacity in her own company, DiabeteSteps Rx and at DiabetesAmerica, where she is able to continue her mantra, Food is Medicine and Medicine is Food, since treatment with food is always her first choice in treating people with diabetes, along with personalizing care with other medically necessary treatments.
