The following excerpt from my Ph.D. thesis illustrates my research philosophy of using the best tools and techniques from multiple disciplines and applying them to address complex biological problems. "Protein Interaction Hot Spots and Engineered Binding Affinity within the Smad4-Ski Interface" Protein-protein interactions underlie a dynamic range of cellular processes that are essential to biological organisms. As such, there is an increased desire to modify these interactions in order to elicit cellular responses. Proteins can be engineered to incorporate desired properties by using techniques from biology, chemistry, mathematics, and computer science. In this cross-disciplinary spirit, the work presented in this thesis explores the effects of mutations within protein interfaces through the use of computational and experimental methods.
