For parts of five decades now I've been in the business of putting ink on media, often in the most demanding of environments. And what's interesting to me is that even though the processes used to get the image to the media have changed, once the ink hits the media, the result and how to control it--even in this digital age--are still much more the same than they're different. These days, when it comes to reproducing color, we live in a world of fractured knowledge. There are the old-school guys who began in a before-digital world, who think of color only as color, and then there are the digital guys, who really prefer to think of color only as numbers. However, what the old-school guys overlook is that whether they like it or not, the numbers exist, they're not going away, and they have to be accounted for. I can't imagine an instance of a color image making it into printed form today without being digitized somewhere in the process. And once digitized it is, by definition, numbers. But what the digital whiz-kids haven't caught onto is that the numbers only get you to the point at which you're finally going to have to use a mechanical process to print. Controlling that mechanical process is and always will be more of an art than a science, and in the end, what matters is what you see, not the delta E.
