Michael D. Baker received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Florida State University in 2010 after completing his undergraduate work at Sam Houston State University in 2002. He is currently a member of the psychology department faculty at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. His research interests include evolutionary perspectives on human behavior and cognition, specifically examining the self-presentational consequences of fundamental social motives. The desire to find a mate, to maintain social relationships, to form alliances, and to obtain a position of dominance within a social hierarchy are theorized to be associated with specific patterns of behavior and cognition that are functional in achieving the goals that are associated with these motives. Dr. Baker's previous work has examined the interaction between mating motives and emotions, risk-taking behavior, and memory performance. He is currently investigating the impact that mating motives and self-presentational concerns have on a variety of health-related behaviors.
