Dr. Murphy is an award-winning teacher, researcher, and a full professor at DePaul University. He has lectured around the world and consulted to or advised over entrepreneurs and firms in Chicago and beyond. He is former Chair of the Management History Division of the Academy of Management and he has published over articles in leading scholarly journals. He is co-editor of the scholarly journal Management Decision and author of Mutiny and Its Bounty Leadership Lessons from the Age of Discovery, published by Yale University Press in . His research is internationally recognized and has been featured in Businessweek, USA Today, The Globe and Mail, US News and World Report, Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, and other major outlets. He has appeared on national radio shows and on television programs such as "Viewpoints" and "Chicago Tonight" to discuss entrepreneurship. Before academia, he was a small craft engineer in the US Navy and Organizational Development Specialist at the North American headquarters of French multinational Schneider Electric. Dr. Murphy speaks Mandarin Chinese and leads DePaul University's internationalization strategy in China, particularly with Huaqiao University in Quanzhou and Xiamen. His teaching, research, and professional scholarly activities fall into the categories of entrepreneurship, management history, and US-China business and entrepreneurial contexts.
