I'm currently involved with the [very exciting] design and implementation of VMware's internally-deployed VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) - called View. With a small team of two we can literally support 3000 users and their VMs. VMware View allows the enterprise to shift desktop computing away from physical laptop and desktop devices into the datacenter (centralizing processing, administration, and data storage). Through the use of Virtual Machines and Linked Clone technology VMware View drastically reduces the administration and storage costs usually associated with desktop provisioning.
